HFET 100: 7 days/6 nights Historic route by flight

Historic Route I

  • Day 1. Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, meet with your guide and transfer to hotel for check in. Overnight. Hotel
  • Day 2. Check in the airport to take the flight to Bahir Dar. Up on arrival, on board at the boat for the cruise on Lake Tana for visiting Island churches including the church of Ura Kidaneleheret and Azewa Mariam. See also the point where Blue Nile Gorge leaves Lake Tana. After lunch, drive to Blue Nile Fall. Overnight. Hotel
  • Day 3. Drive to Gonder and explore the city. Overnight. Hotel.
  • Day 4. Fly to Lalibela. After check in to your hotel, visit the first group of the rock hewn churches of Lalibela. Overnight. Hotel
  • Day 5. Today's activity covers visiting of the second groups of the Rock churches, the cross-shaped church of Lalibela and the cave church of Nacutol'ab. Overnight. Hotel
  • Day 6. Make a site seeing activity of the city including visiting the Axum Archaeological museum, Axum St. Mary of Zion, Axum obelisk compound, tombs of Remhay, Palaces and burial Place for the King Kaleb and Gebre Meskal, Inscription of Ezana. Also visit "Maishum"- the bathing pool for Queen Sheba, "Danghur"- the palace for the Queen. Overnight. Hotel
  • Day 7. Fly back to Addis Ababa. Half day city tour followed by the attendance of Meskal (September 26), join with the local people to participate the celebration to lit the huge bone fire set in the middle of Meskal Square. In the evening departure.

HFET 101: 9 days/8 nights Historic route by flight and surface

Historic Route II

  • Day 1. Arrival Addis Ababa bole international airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon: city tour of Addis Ababa which includes National museum, Merkato (the biggest open air market) and Cathedral Trinity church.
  • Day 2. Fly to Bahir Dar (which takes one hour), the capital of the Amhara region. Transfer to hotel pick up lunch box and water then Boat trip on Lake Tana, the biggest highland lake of Ethiopia, to visit two of the 14th century churches called Ura kidanemihiret and Aswa Mariam which involves 30 minutes walking through the jungle of coffee plantation. In each of the churches you can enjoy the traditional mural paintings of 14th ,17th and 18th century. Afternoon: excursion to the Blue Nile falls.
  • Day 3. Morning drive to Gondar (180 km on paved road) which takes three hours including photo stops of the landscape and visit of an Amhara village. In this village you can visit how these people refine the skin of animals in a traditional way. In the afternoon sightseeing of Gondar to visit: the17th century castle compound where there are six independent castles for each emperor the church of Debrebirhan silase for its wall and ceiling painting of the 17th century the bath of Fasillades ( the first king of the Gondarean period and the founder of Gondar).
  • Day 4. Drive to Semien Mountain National Park (which takes three hours drive) admiring the amazing landscape which makes Ethiopia to be called the roof of Africa and enjoying some wild life like the Gelada Baboon or the bleeding heart baboon, the clip springer, the bush buck and birds. Overnight in Semien Lodge.
  • Day 5. Full day drive to Axum which is 270 km enjoying scenery of landscape and visits of villages. Overnight in Yeha hotel.
  • Day 6. Visit Axums obelisks, different archaeological sites, the bath and the palace of Queen of Sheba, the tomb of kings and the church of St Mary of Zion (where legend says the Ark of Covenant, brought here from Israel by King Menelik the first, is kept). Overnight in Yeha hotel.
  • Day 7. Morning transfer to Axum airport for the flight to Lalibela. After noon sight seeing of the rock hewn churches carved during the 13th centuary by king Lalibela which makes Lalibela to be considerd as the holiest city of Ethiopia (and sometimes as the African Petra) with the adjucent museum which has collections of tresures of this time.
  • Day 8. Excursion to Yimrehane Kirstos church, situated 45 km away from the town of Lalibela. This church is constructed inside a cave in the 11th century adapting the Axumite architecture. Afternoon: attend the traditional coffee ceremony which Ethiopians do 3 times a day.
  • Day 9. Fly back to Addis Ababa transfer to the day use room or shopping. Evening transfer out for the flight back home.

Historic Route III

  • Day 8. Drive to Mekele. On the way visit the 5th century BC temple (called Yeha temple) and Debre Damo monastery (dated from the 4th century AC and the most inaccessible church in Ethiopia where men climb with ropes for about 11 meters. Women are not allowed to go in this monastery). Overnight in Axum hotel or Hill top hotel.
  • Day 9. Excursion to visit three Trigray rock hewn churches named as Aba Abreham, Abreha Atsbeha and Wukro Mariam. If time allows visit the market of salt. Overnight in Axum hotel.
  • Day 10. Early in the morning drive to Lalibela which is 320 km, admiring the spectacular view of the landscape and villages. Overnight in Mountain view or Cliff Edge hotel.
  • Day 11. HFET 105: Northern Historic route with Harar by flight

Historic Route V

  • Day 1. Arrival in Addis Ababa . Transfer to the hotel for some rest and in the afternoon city tour of Addis Ababa which includes the national museum, panoramic view of Addis Ababa from Entoto Mountain.
  • Day 2. Early in the morning transfer to the domestic airport for the flight to DireDarwa. Upon arrival meet the driver for the drive to Harar, the 4th oldest Islamic city in the world. On the way visit the Kefira camel market, oldest rail way station in Dire dawa, the "quat" market in Awaday and the panoramic view of the oldest walled city. After noon city tour of the old walled city with five gates, palace of Haile sillase, Arthur Ramoud's house and typical Harari people houses and the colourful Christian and Islamic market out and inside the walled city respectively. In the evening after dinner see the hyena men, who call and feed the hyena's.
  • Day 3. Fly back to Addis Ababa and fly to Bahir Dar the same day.
  • Day 4. Afternoon visit the Palace of Queen of Sheba, the Tomb of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, the 4th C AD inscription which is written in three languages.
  • Day 7. Visit obelisks, different archeological sites, the bath and the palace of Queen of Sheba, the tomb of kings and the church of St Mary of Zion (where legend says the Ark of Covenant, brought here from Israel by King Menelik the first, is said to be kept).
  • Day 8. Fly to Lalibela, transfer in from the airport to the hotel and afternoon sightseeing of the the first group of the rock hewn churches carved out of rocks during the 12th century by king Lalibela which make Lalibela to be considerd as the holiest city of Ethiopia and the African Petra with the adjucent museum which has got collection of treasures of this time. Overnight Mountain view or Cliff edge hotel.
  • Day 9. Excursion to Yimrehane Kirstos church, situated 45kms away from the town of Lalibela. This church is constructed inside a cave in the 11th century adapting the Axumite architecture. After noon visit the second group of Lalibela rock hewn churches which are carved out to be the example of the heavenly Jerusalem. They are five in total and Betelehem, where the communiun used to be prepared. Overnight Mountain view of Cliff edge hotel.
  • Day 10. Full day in Lalibela at your leisure. Either visit the monasteries in the out skirt of Lalibela Asheton Mariam, Neakuto leab and Genete Mariam or just walking in the villages and relax in the hotel. Late in the afternoon enjoy coffee ceremony in a local house.
  • Day 11. Fly back to Addis Ababa. In the evening transfer to the international airport for the flight back to home.
